Trees
Scott Austin "The Garden Guru" has been a garden expert at GardenWorks for two
decades now. He can help you find the right plant for any landscape and can give you the tips you need to ensure that
it will be a success for years to come.
As nursery manager Scott brings in dozens of varieties of shade trees, many of which are raised locally at our very own
growing facility. We also carry a large amount of evergreen and deciduous shrubs that can help you add shape and colour
to any bed in your yard.
Our shade trees can help add a breath of fresh air to your yard and some much needed shade in the hot summer months.
Shade trees can also reduce your power bill by protecting your house from the sun during the warmer months.
Remember to pick up a couple stakes and some ties for that new tree in order to keep it standing during its first few
years. Along with stakes we’d recommend mixing in some compost or manure with your existing soil and some bone meal to
promote strong root growth.
Shrubs
Shrubs can be used to add colour or some greenery to an empty space. Certain flowering shrubs can also be used to attract
butterflies, hummingbirds and other wildlife. Each animal has its own specific feeding preferences, so let us help you set
up a sanctuary in your yard for these welcomed visitors.
We have a wide selection of hedging materials, which can be great for adding privacy to your yard or creating a barrier
from strong Okanagan winds.
Having problems with deer? Come in and ask Scott or any of our other garden experts about our deer resistant shrubs and
trees. Proper plant selection can save many headaches later on caused by deer munching on your new plants.
Looking to garden in a greener way? We have a wide selection of water-wise shrubs that can minimize or even eliminate the
need for watering in your yard. We also stock a variety of native plant species, which can minimize the need for pesticides
or chemical fertilizers.
Vines
Vines are an easy way to cover large areas where traditional plants might not work. They can grow on buildings, fences,
arbors, trellises or even just along the ground. They are great for hiding unappealing areas in the yards, or for providing
some privacy from a neighbor.
Wisteria and Honeysuckle are some great examples of flowering vines that can add some colour to your yard and attract birds
and butterflies. Boston Ivy and Virginia Creeper and really hardy non-flowering varieties that can grow up to 60 feet and turn
a brilliant red in the fall. These species work well as a quick fix when someone needs a large area hidden or covered.
Clematis is one of the more popular vines at GardenWorks because of its beautiful flowers that come in the summer.
The flowers come in shades of purple, pink, white and red and are appreciated for their slower growing rate compared to
other vines.
